About

Cocomo was a nickname from my pawpaw.
He got it from the Beach Boys’ “Kokomo,” partly as a nod to my mom’s side of the family, who are Cuban by way of Key West. My dad’s side is Creole and Cajun out of New Orleans, so the name ended up sticking with me for a lot of reasons.
The longer story goes through the Marine Corps. After I got out, I eventually found psychedelic therapy, mostly through ayahuasca. Somewhere in that process I got back in touch with the part of myself that spent childhood drawing, taking pictures, and making videos. I decided to go back to school for design and take that side of myself seriously again. Cocomo Creative Collective grew out of that.
Background
I think everyone should have some kind of creative outlet. Ayahuasca is what pushed me back toward mine.
Heroic Hearts Project connects veterans with psychedelic therapy, and they gave me a lot when I went through my own experience with ayahuasca in 2021. I eventually came back as an integration coach and advocate. For the last few years I’ve worked with veterans before and after retreats, helping them prepare for the experience and make sense of it once they come home. I talk about the work openly because plenty of veterans still have no idea these options exist.
The Heroic Hearts zine and brochure came later as a class project, not something they hired me to make. Spending a whole term with that material brought me back into my own experience more than I expected from a school assignment. Projects like the Café du Monde redesign and Louilingo come from somewhere else, but they’re personal in a similar way. I tend to make my best work when I actually care about the subject.
My background is kind of all over the place. I grew up in a military family, moved around, served in the Marine Corps, and kept traveling after I got out. Somewhere along the way I learned to fly helicopters and airplanes and became a scuba instructor. None of that is traditional design training, but it gave me a lot of different ways to look at things. I’ve spent a lot of time being the beginner at something difficult, and I think that helps when I’m trying to create for somebody other than myself.
Education
2021 — Winter 2024
Graphic design foundations with a lot of typography, branding, publications, motion graphics, and packaging.
Fall 2024 — present
Design methods, advanced typography, visual storytelling, design history, and a lot more focus on how to think through a problem before designing the answer.
Also me
Marine veteran. PADI Pro. Integration coach. When I’m not working or in school, I’m usually outside somewhere with my dog Thor and a camera.
The studio today
These days, Cocomo Creative Co. covers identity, packaging, publications, animation like Rabbit on the Moon, and a steady stream of music videos for artists around the world.
I like connecting with people who care about what they’re making, so if you have something interesting in the works, reach out.
And yes, that’s my dog Thor on the right. He was mid-stretch. I was not ready.
